The small beach town of Progreso in northern Yucatán, Mexico, is the perfect option for families looking for a winter break. Ideal winter temperatures that range between 25 – 28℃ (77 – 83℉) are perfect for hanging out on the beach, exploring the town, or heading to a Mayan ruin or a cenote.
Progreso is a cute beach town a 40-minute drive from Mérida, or a 4-hour drive from Cancun International Airport. All along the beachfront, find fun photo opportunities, beach activities, and restaurants serving incredible food. Walk to the new Malecon Internacional (on the far side of the world’s longest pier) at dusk, enjoy street food, and join local families walking and playing. At the far end, find a wooden playground for older kids and two smaller ones for the younger kids.
Be sure to check out the new Museo del Meteorito (Meteorite Museum) and then take a cab over to the next-door town of Chicxulub Puerto to stand at the epicenter of the meteorite collision that wiped out the dinosaurs some sixty-six million years ago.
Once you have explored Progreso, there are many options for excellent days out, especially as the whole of the north Yucatán coast has gorgeous beaches, and the beautiful colonial city of Mérida is a short drive away.
In Mérida, you can explore the city—visiting museums and learning about local history and food. Discover several archaeological sites within easy reach of Progreso, including the world-famous Chichén Itzá and smaller ones such as Dzibilchaltun and Xcambo. If your family enjoys swimming, carve out time to take a dip in one of the many cenotes (ancient water holes) all over the peninsula.

Over the years and the different ages of our kids—we have stayed at this Club Med seven times. In addition to a manageable resort layout, rooms perfect for families, and a great location on Playa Quieta with its gentle waves, expect excellent food, included activities, and even kids’ clubs that will keep your whole family happy. There are so many reasons to love this resort that I share ten of them here, plus an entire overview of what to expect with a stay.
While in Ixtapa and staying at the Club Med, carve out at least one day to visit nearby Ixtapa Island. One mile off Playa Quieta, you can see this car-free island and its beachfront restaurants from the shore. A quick 10-minute boat ride will get you there, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, excellent snorkeling at Coral Beach, and some of the most delicious seafood and fresh tortillas you will eat during your entire trip!
20. Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco

If you want a warm weather destination in the Americas, consider a weeklong vacation to Puerto Vallarta. This sunny and tropical destination on the western side of the Mexican Riviera has perfect weather during the winter and is a safe and family-friendly place to visit.
Puerto Vallarta offers that exceptional destination that is well suited for families if you love all-in-one resorts, DIY experiences touring around the area, or guided tours for specific interests. You can easily spend the week exploring the region around Puerto Vallarta or enjoy your resort, doing some easy beach days and fun boat excursions.
The food scene in Puerto Vallarta is delicious and affordable, from the street food vendors plying freshly made tacos and churros to beachside dining to international food styles that would satisfy any food-lover visiting the area.
If you are an adventure seeker, join a hike to a local waterfall to explore the more remote hills and trails on foot or on horseback, or take a local boat to an off-the-beaten-path destination.
Staying in Puerto Vallarta offers many housing and hotel options, from budget to luxury resorts. Our favorite area to stay in is in the heart of the old town district, where everything is walkable. Consider booking at Vallarta Shores in the central Zona Romantica area for a perfect getaway.
21. San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur

Located just 20 minutes from Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo feels like worlds away from the frenetic vibe of its popular northern neighbor. Instead, in San Jose del Cabo, you will find spacious and family-friendly resorts, protected areas of natural landscape, and an old town that comes alive each Thursday night with a vibrant art market.
With mostly pleasant weather throughout the year (avoid August and September to miss the rainy season) and direct flights from most major US airports, San Jose del Cabo is an excellent choice for a weeklong winter getaway for the whole family.
After visiting San Jose del Cabo a few times, I always stay at Hilton’s Cabo Azul Resort. Although it is not all-inclusive, the four on-site restaurants are top-notch, and the beach loungers are so comfortable that they have ruined me for all other resorts. Also, this particular resort is just a few hundred yards from highly rated off-site restaurants and shops. Read my full review of the hotel here.
While beach lounging and resort activities will occupy much of your week here, there are also nearby family-friendly adventures. Thursday night’s art market in the town square includes food trucks and live performances. Many typical tourist activities are available nearby in Cabo San Lucas, which your resort’s concierge can arrange for you.
I recommend, however, getting kids into a more authentic experience of Mexico with a day trip to Todos Santos. Todos Santos is a small town about an hour from Cabo that Mexico has designated as a “Pueblo Magico” due to its cultural, historical, and aesthetic value.

22. Belize

Belize offers an ideal destination for North American travelers trying to escape the worst sting of the winter cold. The end of December and the beginning of January sees Belize come out of its rainy season, making it a perfect time to visit. Plus, with English as an official language and the US dollar accepted universally, trading two-to-one with the Belize dollar, a trip here is even easier for US visitors.
A week is the perfect amount of time to visit Belize, though, like so many other excellent locations shared in this list, there is much to see and do, and more days would always be better!
To make the most of your weeklong stay, after landing at the international airport near Belize City, take transport west toward the town of San Ignacio. This town is the perfect place to use as a hub to explore all of the natural beauty and Mayan archeological wonders that this region offers. You and your family will easily find more to do here than you could possibly fit in an entire month. See a list of 36 possible options here.
Stay in town at a place like the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. Or my personal favorite recommendation—stay outside of town at one of several nearby full-service jungle lodges. The lodge options range from super luxury to rustic comfort. Expect your room rate to include meals, or know you can purchase them ala carte. The lodges will have activities on-site, in-house, or will book them with vendor partners for you.
During our recent Belize visit, we stayed four nights at the small, though incredibly family-friendly Macaw Bank Jungle Lodge, loving everything about it, including the lovely couple who run it.
After several days at your jungle lodge, return east for oceanfront rest and relaxation. The top island or beach options for visiting families include Ambergris Caye or Placencia. Some families stay on Caye Caulker as well—though this completely chill island, a dream for backpackers and kidless adult travelers, has more of a party vibe. And for families, it offers a better destination for a day trip.
To split our weeklong Belize stay, and after leaving the jungle, we chose to spend three nights on Ambergris Caye, as this island offered the best opportunity for snorkeling with a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Hol Chan Marine Reserve. 23. Costa Rica

The hardest part about visiting Costa Rica for a week in the winter will be deciding where to go! This lush and incredibly eco-friendly Central American country offers so many options. For a first visit, consider flying into the capital of San Jose and driving to start your trip in the La Fortuna area to see the Arenal Volcano.
Your family may love staying out of town at the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails, which offers some of the closest views of the wildly impressive Arenal volcano. This relaxed nature resort, which offers on-site horseback riding and trails with observation platforms, features low-key comfortable rooms spread out among several buildings on pretty grounds. Book your family’s activities through the resort and eat at the on-site restaurant.
After Arenal, gain some altitude and head to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Stay in or just outside the town of Santa Elena at a place like Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, which features beautiful grounds and its own butterfly house. See incredible wildlife in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve. Or book a guide for hikes and bird watching in the Curi-Cancha Reserve. While in Monteverde, your kids may love the thrill of a guide-led night walk where they can see sloths, snakes, and tarantulas!
Following Monteverde, and if you have time to spare, continue moving west past Liberia and to the Pacific to hit the beach for some rest and relaxation before heading home. Choose from several options, though you may love Playa Hermosa and an oceanfront hotel like Hotel Bosque Del Mar, where you can book activities and transfers.
When you are (not at all) ready to wrap up your trip, catch your return flight from Costa Rica’s convenient international airport in Liberia, which offers several nonstop options to North American locations.
24. El Salvador

The winter months are the best time to visit Central America, which enjoys its best weather from November until April. And El Salvador is no exception. As the smallest country in Central America, it is quick, easy, and cheap to travel around to different towns and cities, with just an hour or two separating the mountains and volcanoes from the beaches.
With one week in El Salvador, I recommend visiting Santa Ana—a beautiful colonial town, and El Tunco, a beach town on the Pacific Ocean coast. Three or four days in each place will be the perfect way to enjoy the fun activities and beautiful weather.
In Santa Ana, active travelers will want to visit Santa Ana Volcano to see the beautiful crater lake, a vivid turquoise color. Or to the nearby hot spring waterfalls called Salto de Malacatiupan, where the river is a balmy 90+ Fahrenheit!
On the coast, you can swim in the rock pools, explore the caves, take a guided tour to an epic waterfall, or try surfing lessons. But it is also a great place to relax on the beach to the sound of crashing waves or on a sun lounger next to the pool, like at Hotel Roca Sunzal, which has two pools and family-friendly rooms.
Both places are a short drive from the international airport, aptly named El Salvador International Airport, making it perfect for quick trips.
25. Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Lake Atitlan is a gorgeous Guatemalan lake surrounded by majestic volcanoes and vibrant Mayan villages. Folks who love culture, nature, and adventure will be charmed by all that Lake Atitlan offers—and shocked by how easy it is to reach Guatemala from North America.
Despite how few Americans and Canadians know about Lake Atitlan, it is a popular vacation destination in Guatemala. This popularity makes shuttles from the airport easy to catch and lodging convenient, given the abundance of hotels and rental properties in the lakeside villages.
When planning a weeklong trip, dedicate at least a day to the Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve in the village of San Marcos. This stunning lakeside park is the best spot for swimming in Lake Atitlan, with areas to relax on the rocks lakeside and a 40-foot cliff jump for thrill seekers.
You’ll also want to explore Atitlan’s enchanting lakeside villages, which are each unique. Use the water taxis to travel around—a fun activity in and of itself. Head to San Juan to see the Women’s Weaving Co-Op, try indigenous food from around the country at Konojel Restaurant in San Marcos, or get a taste of local life in Tzununa, one of the least visited villages on the lake.
One Atitlan hotel that stands out is Hotel La Casa del Mundo, a sustainable property with perfect volcano views, a hot tub, a pool, a sauna, kayaks, and an on-site restaurant.
26. Panama

Panama, a vibrant Central American gem, is an excellent warm-weather destination for families seeking a break from the winter chill. Families can enjoy beautiful beaches, explore the rich biodiversity in its rainforests, or dive into the culture in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Casco Viejo.
With a wide array of family-friendly accommodations and activities, such as the Panama Canal Museum, the Punta Culebra Nature Center, and the Gamboa Rainforest Reserve, there is something for everyone.
Begin your week by exploring Panama City’s rich blend of modern skyscrapers and historic charm in 2 days. Tour the Panama Canal, a marvel of engineering, where children and adults alike can learn about its fascinating history at the Miraflores Visitor Center.
Visit the Metropolitan Natural Park, which offers hikes and wildlife sightings within the city. Venture out to the beautiful beaches of Bocas del Toro for three days, where families can engage in snorkeling, surfing, or relaxing on the sand. Stay at the family-friendly Koko Acqua Lodge.
Wrap up your trip back in Panama City for the last two days, using one to do a day trip to the San Blas Islands, providing an immersive cultural experience before you fly home.
Given December is at the end of the rainy season, you can expect to enjoy sunshine and warmth. The friendly locals, safe environment, and relative affordability make Panama the perfect winter getaway for families.
27. Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a diverse country with expansive landscapes, delicious foods, and exciting activities. Winter is the perfect time for a family getaway as it is the dry season with steady, warm temperatures.
Start your trip in the beautiful colonial city of Leon. Explore the charming churches and head to the roof of the all-white cathedral, a stunning mix of baroque and neoclassical designs.
Pan & Paz French Bakery is a great spot to start your day in the morning. While a walking tour is a great way to orient yourself at the start of your trip. Those looking for more adventure should head to Cerro Negro, where the whole family can enjoy sandboarding down an active volcano (and the youngest volcano in Central America).
After two nights in Leon, head south to the smaller city of Granada for two more nights amongst beautiful Spanish colonial architecture. Masya Volcano National Park is not to be missed on the way. Best visited at the end of the day, you can see glowing lava light up a deep lava lake and walk among the volcanic landscapes.
While in Granada city center, you can explore the waterfront of Lake Nicaragua and discover delicious lunch options at The Garden Café. Learn about local initiatives at Smiles Coffee and Tio Antonio Hammocks, where you can also peruse perfect handmade souvenirs.
Finally, make your way to San Jorge, where you can catch the ferry over to Ometepe Island. Three nights here is the perfect way to end your trip at the shoreside Hotel Finca Venecia. You can hike one of the two towering volcanoes or relax on the lakeside beach. Take a trip to see ancient carvings, known as petroglyphs, and look for local wildlife like howler monkeys. Or spend the day at a spring spa, where you can soak away the thought of returning home in a fresh pool of water.
28. Argentina

The South American country of Argentina is great for families: it is budget-friendly, the food and scenery are top-notch, and some of the best parts of the country have warm weather all year long, making for a nice winter escape!
Spend the first two or three days visiting Argentina by flying to Puerto Iguazu and admiring the spectacular Iguazu Falls, one of the world’s biggest waterfalls, which spans the border between Argentina and Brazil.
Follow this with at least two days in the Patagonia region, where you can do the spectacular Perito Moreno glacier trek. For this activity, put on ice crampons and join a guided tour where you and your group can walk on a giant blue glacier.
Perito Moreno is famous for being one of Argentina’s largest glaciers, and winter in North America is actually one of the best months for visiting Patagonia since the seasons are reversed! If you have time for another trek in Patagonia, you can do the bucket-list-worthy ‘Laguna De Los Tres’ hike—or the Fitz Roy hike.
For the last two days of your trip, enjoy the food and culture of Buenos Aires. For special activities in this capital city, attend a Tango dance show or try Argentine barbeque, wine, and empanadas. Stay at a family-friendly hotel in the city, like the Mine Hotel Boutique, which includes a buffet breakfast and a great location near some of the best sights!
29. Chile

To escape the winter, Santiago, Chile, offers a fascinating hot weather destination with plenty of activities for the whole family. Being the capital, you will find everything from history and culture to excellent food and entertainment. Plus, Santiago is easy to get to, with direct flights from several major North American cities.
But what makes Santiago stand out is its proximity to some of Chile’s most spectacular sites, making it a great place to base yourself as you explore some of the country.
During a weeklong stay, you should spend your first two to three days exploring the city’s key sites and architecturally significant buildings, such as the Plaza de Armas, Palacio de La Moneda, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Or fascinating museums, including the Museum of Memory and Human Rights and the Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts—the oldest museum in South America!
Next on your itinerary should be several day trips outside the city. Being in the Andes, a day hiking in Chile is a must. In particular, try spotting the largest flying bird in the world from the condor lookout in the Maipo Canyon!
And, given the southern hemisphere’s hot weather, winter is a perfect time for a day at the beach in Vina del Mar. Only a 2-hour drive from Santiago, you will arrive at Vina del Mar, a picturesque seaside resort to enjoy long sandy beaches, street entertainment, delicious restaurants, and plenty of ice-cream shops.
If you are wondering where to stay in Santiago, the Hotel Gran Palace is a great option right near all the attractions in the city center and has different-sized family rooms available.
30. Colombia

Colombia is a fantastic destination for a memorable winter break. With its rich and vibrant culture, Colombia offers plenty of cultural experiences for families to enjoy. Being near the equator means Colombia enjoys warm and sunny weather throughout the year. And while cities like Bogota are at higher elevations, making the temperature cooler, it still remains moderate throughout the year.
Colombia is easily reached from many places in North America and is in the same time zone as Chicago, making it easy for families to adapt to the time change.
Start your week in the capital city of Bogotá. There are plenty of family-friendly activities, such as visiting the Gold Museum, seeing the view from Montserrate, or exploring the historic La Candelaria district. The large Simon Bolivar park is a fantastic place to spend the day, with paths, playgrounds, and plenty of green space for picnics. Or visit the family-friendly Maloka Museo Interactivo, an interactive science museum that kids will love.
After spending a few days in the capital city, fly to Cartagena on the Caribbean coast to experience a different side of Colombia. Spend time exploring the historic walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kids will love the colorful streets and the chance to walk along the city walls, but there are plenty of other things to do in Cartagena with kids.
For example, take a day trip to the Rosario islands for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing on the gorgeous sandy beaches. While in town, try some fresh ceviche, relax by a pool, and shop for souvenirs at one of the local markets to pick up a keepsake to help remember your wonderful trip.
31. Peru

Peru, the land of ancient civilizations and breathtaking landscapes, offers an adventure-packed vacation for families with active kids. Hot without being humid and easy to get to, Peru is a perfect, all-round destination for families.
From exploring the ancient cities of Lima and Cusco to discovering the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu, this one-week itinerary showcases the best of Peru’s cultural wonders.
Days 1 & 2: Lima
After settling into your hotel, walk the scenic Malecón de Miraflores and enjoy Peru’s renowned cuisine at a local restaurant. Next morning, visit the Larco Museum to learn about Peru’s rich history; in the afternoon, explore the historic downtown area, including the San Francisco Monastery and its eerie catacombs.
In the evening, fly to Cusco, the gateway to the Sacred Valley. For a budget-friendly family hotel, try the well-located Los Portales.
Days 3 -7: Cusco & Machu Picchu
Spend a day in Cusco acclimatizing to the altitude and exploring the charming streets. Next morning, meet your guide for an early start to the classic 4-day Inca Trail trek. Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Incas as you climb through the Andes to Machu Picchu. Reaching 14,500 feet—this trek is a challenge and ideal for older kids and teens, but you will rewarded for your efforts!
On your final day, explore Machu-Picchu with your kids and let their imaginations run wild as they uncover the mysteries of the Incas. Take the scenic train back to Cusco before flying back to Lima.
