Why You Will Love Enchantment Resort: A Review

Beautifully tucked into striking Boynton Canyon, whose red rock walls glow golden at sunrise and sunset, Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Arizona, is an idyllic place for a getaway. Surrounded by the Coconino National Forest, find the resort immersed in nature. If you are fortunate to have your visit overlap with light rain, you may even catch the fresh scent of the creosote bush and its heady desert fragrance. Further enhance your experience with the luxe service, unreal views, and serene atmosphere this resort offers.

A convenient 15-minute drive from the main commercial strip that bisects Sedona, a stay at Enchantment Resort means you are removed from the busyness of town and its crowds, though close enough to enjoy its conveniences. In addition, and a big perk for hikers, Enchantment’s prime position gives you easy access to several of Sedona’s top trails.

Considering these highlights, you may already realize Enchantment Resort is the ideal place for your next trip. However, if not, this comprehensive review can help. In it, and based on my recent visit, I candidly rate my stay, share a video tour of our room, and detail what to expect, including the cost. I also cover elements of the resort that exceeded expectations and others that could improve, and what activities, dining, and shopping are worth a further splurge.

Sedona: Why & when to visit.

Located in the northern part of the western US state of Arizona, Sedona is known for its transcendent natural beauty and spiritual energy. Dramatic red rock formations featuring hundreds of trails perfect for hiking, biking, and off-road tours surround the town and attract visitors worldwide.

The spiritual attraction in Sedona emanates from its four major and a few minor vortex sites, including Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyon—home of Enchantment Resort. Believed to be a concentrated spot where energy enters or exits the earth, typically in a spiral pattern, a vortex site is thought to offer physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits.

Additionally, Sedona makes for an ideal getaway for nearly any visitor, whether seeking spiritual elevation or not. From friend trips, which I did this past visit, to a couple’s weekend or family vacation—we did one many years ago with grandma and our then two-year-old—time spent in Sedona will highly satisfy all comers. 

Ideal times to visit Sedona are in the spring—when temperatures warm and flowers bloom—and in the fall, when the worst of the summer heat is over. However, Sedona is one of those rare destinations you can comfortably visit year-round. Bucking the popular visitor trend, I have been to Sedona in the summer and winter. Both seasons can be lovely, especially if you plan for the weather accordingly—with early morning or late day hikes in the summer and layers in the winter.

What a stay at Enchantment Resort costs.

I visited Enchantment Resort in early December for a three-night joint milestone birthday trip with a friend. This time of year is by no means the high season in Sedona. It is more of a brief sleepy period between US Thanksgiving and Christmas. While we were there, the main pool was under construction, and the resort felt about half full.

What a room at Enchantment Resort costs.

Being advanced planners, my friend and I pre-booked our two-queen Casita Guest Room at Enchantment Resort for a December stay on Booking.com in August mainly because I preferred Booking.com’s very flexible late November no-penalty cancellation policy and delayed payment. Otherwise, the rates on Booking.com and the Enchantment website were nearly identical.

Including taxes and fees, our shared room costs just over $600 per day, or $300 each, for a total spend of slightly more than $900 each for a three-night stay. This rate did not include meals and only a limited number of activities. However, it did include a daily resort fee. Expect this rate to be higher in busier seasons. 

A few weeks before our visit, out of curiosity, I repriced the same room on the Enchantment website and saw the price had increased several hundred dollars to nearly $1000 per day. So, if you are considering a stay here—based on this limited research—I recommend booking early, especially if you can get a no-penalty cancellation reservation like we did on Booking.com. It might help you save quite a bit.

My ratings: Location, rooms, service, & dining. 

Based on my three-night December visit, here is how I rate the location, rooms, service, and dining at Enchantment Resort on a scale of one to 10, 10 being the highest. 

Location: 10

Rooms: 9

Service: 7 to 10

Dining: 6 to 9

Location: The location of Enchantment Resort in Boynton Canyon is superb. On a scale of 10, it deserves a 13. Based on location alone, a stay here is worth it. You get the best of all worlds—surrounded by the sublime and peaceful beauty of Sedona’s unique red rock topography and access to town. Plus, there is no other resort in the vicinity. Enchantment and Mii Amo own the extensive grounds, and as a guest, you get to enjoy the peace and serenity that come with a stay here. 

Rooms: The rooms here have ample space and are beautifully designed and thoughtfully furnished in a modern southwestern style and supplied with attractive lighting, convenient device charging areas, coffee makers, water filters, bathrobes, and luxe bath products with ingredients like cedar and sage. However, I rated our room a nine instead of 10 because we could surprisingly hear quite a lot in the next-door unit. Luckily, our neighbors were mostly quiet, so it was not an issue. Given the sturdy-looking adobe walls and luxe interiors, I expected better soundproofing. 

Service: Our entry experience at Enchantment Resort was a 10. Upon driving up to reception, greeters warmly welcomed us with spiced hot apple cider and a guided tour of the property. This first introduction was so flawless that I commend whoever at Enchantment oversees the guest welcome process. 

However, things went slightly downhill from there. Not bad per se—though, my expectations were high after the welcome, and the rest of our interactions failed to reach the same level. For example, our interaction at the check-in desk felt transactional, lacking the warmth the greeters offered. Additionally, I had to ask for a calendar of events and classes during our stay. Not a big deal—however, not automatically providing one seemed like an oversight. Many guests may not know they can join classes and workshops at Mii amo or participate in free events like Saturday evening stargazing.

Further, I found the service at the restaurants, from the hosts to the servers, average at best. And in some cases, given the price point, especially at Enchantment’s higher-end Che Ah Chi—less than stellar with room to improve. I cover this more in my section on dining. Perhaps these shortfalls were due to a remnant staffing shortage. Given the times, this is understandable. However, we were left feeling that the back of the house could take some instruction from the very front—it just did not feel in sync, thus the lower rating.

Dining: Given the convenience of its restaurants, I wanted to love the food here more. However, it was not as good as I hoped, especially given its upscale offerings. We ate at Enchantment’s two main restaurants—Che Ah Chi once for finer dining, Tii Gavo twice for more relaxed meals, and Mii amo’s Hummingbird for breakfast. In addition, we picked up breakfast, coffee, and to-go picnic lunches daily at The Market. I share a complete overview of our dining experiences here. 

How to get to Enchantment Resort.

Another perk of visiting Enchantment Resort is that it is easy to get here. Enchantment Resort is a two-hour drive north from Phoenix’s busy Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), which offers flights from 20+ airlines, with nonstop flights to 120+ domestic destinations and 25 international ones. See a complete listing of destinations here. We flew into the Phoenix airport on a direct flight from Chicago and rented a car to drive north to Sedona.

For regional travelers, Enchantment Resort is also within an easy 1-hour drive from the Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) and a 1.25-hour drive from the Prescott Regional Airport (PRC). Additionally, visitors traveling via private air or helicopter can land at the Sedona Airport, a 20-minute drive from Enchantment Resort.

Accommodation options at Enchantment Resort.

Enchantment Resort offers a variety of luxurious accommodations, each designed with attention to detail, a modern southwestern style, and the comfort of guests in mind. The adobe-style casitas and suites blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. 

You can choose from nine lodging options listed below, with the most affordable shown first. All rooms have a private viewing deck with seating or a balcony, convenient device charging areas, attractive lighting, blackout window coverings, a Nespresso coffee maker, filtered water, robes, and Mii amo-branded aromatherapy bath products.

Casita Guest Room (sleeps 2 to 4). At 470 square feet, this is the smallest of the guest rooms and the unit we stayed in. It comes with two queen beds or a king and is the closest to a regular hotel room. However, at nearly 500 square feet, it feels more spacious. See my video walkthrough of our unit below. We booked this room on Booking.com.

Casita Studio (sleeps 2). At 650 square feet, this studio with a queen Murphy bed has a kitchenette and a gas fireplace.

Junior Suite (sleeps 2 to 4). Slightly smaller than the studio, at 620 square feet, the suite has one king bed or two queens. It also offers a dedicated sitting area, a gas fireplace, and a soaking tub.

Casita One-bedroom Suite (sleeps up to 6). Spread out with 1,120 square feet, a sleeping configuration of one king and queen Murphy bed or one queen and two queen Murphy beds. Get a kitchenette, dining table, separate living room, a gas fireplace, and an outdoor grill.

Hacienda One-bedroom Suite (sleeps up to 8). Bump up to 1,870 square feet of space and a sleeping arrangement with three or four beds. Enjoy a full kitchen, dining table, separate living room, a fireplace, and an outdoor grill.

Casa One-bedroom Suite (sleeps 2). Designed for luxe space and amenities specifically for two, get 1,100 square feet, a full kitchen, living room, a soaking tub, a gas fireplace, an outdoor grill, and private covered parking.

Casita Two-bedroom Suite (sleeps up to 8). Get this two-bedroom unit with either a five or four-bed combination. Have the building to yourself, sharing no walls with neighbors and getting 1,590 square feet with a kitchenette, dining room, two private bedrooms, a gas fireplace, a soaking tub, and an outdoor grill.

Hacienda Two-bedroom Suite (sleeps up to 10). This two-bedroom unit comes in a five or six-bed configuration in a standalone 2,340-square-foot unit, with two private primary bedroom suites, a kitchenette, a dining room, a gas fireplace, a soaking tub, and an outdoor grill.

Casa Two-bedroom Suite (sleeps 4). Get two private bedrooms, a full kitchen, a living room, a soaking tub, a gas fireplace, an outdoor grill, and private covered parking in a standalone unit.

We stayed in a two-queen Casita Guest Room corner unit in building #37, specifically unit #337, which we found spacious for two and well-appointed. Plus, we appreciated the convenience of its double vanity and the enclosed toilet. However, the best feature of all was its private balcony. We got lucky with this room, positioned higher on the canyon walls with a sweeping and unobstructed view. Only units in slightly higher building #38 had better views (we asked). Dining experiences at Enchantment Resort.

Reviewing our dining experiences at Enchantment Resort is tough. Especially given the convenience of eating at the resort and its beautiful views, I wanted to love the food here more. I assign a rating, based on a scale of one to 10, 10 being the highest, for each restaurant we ate at below. Then, I include how much we spent at each.

And to fairly frame my assessment, I am not typically a five-star resort traveler. My sweet spot is high-quality one to 3-star hotels in Europe. However, I am an avid and adventurous home cook and a traveler who has dined at a full range of price points in 50+ countries, qualifying me to recognize excellent food and service. So, when I pay more, my expectations are higher. I start with our best experience first. 

The Market: Rating & review. 

Rating: 9
Spent over 3 days = $164, or $82 per person for two breakfasts and two lunches

Located at the bottom level of the main Enchantment Resort building and directly under the Tii Gavo restaurant, The Market at Enchantment Resort serves to-go breakfasts, coffees, and sandwiches for quick, easy, and low-key meals. Service was fast, and the food was good. On two mornings, for breakfast, I got the oatmeal, and my friend got the breakfast burrito. Depending on the weather, we ate our food in our room or enjoyed it on the patio outside Tii Gavo enjoying the beautiful red rock views. I could not imagine a better way to start a day. 

Twice, we also grabbed sandwiches and snacks from The Market to bring with us for picnic lunches. The Italian and the Enchantment club, like a panini, were entirely satisfying and paired perfectly with hiking. Along with breakfast and sandwiches, The Market serves enticing baked goods, conveniently packaged gourmet refrigerated fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and shelf-stable snacks, crackers, and wine. 

Hummingbird: Rating & review. 

Rating: 8
Total meal cost = $98, or $49 per person for one breakfast

Not technically at Enchantment Resort, the award-winning Hummingbird restaurant is within the Mii amo property and walkable or within a short golf cart ride from anywhere at Enchantment Resort. We made a reservation for an early breakfast on the day of our departure. The views and decor at the Hummingbird were stellar.

However, I found its service, which was incredibly friendly and attentive, and its food quality could have been better in its technical execution. For example, our busser offered and poured us coffee before we realized we could order specialty drinks.

Then, it was not clear that before receiving our entrees, we would each get a complimentary thick slab of toasted banana bread with strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries as a pre-breakfast appetizer—which, despite being served with rock-hard butter, turned out to be my favorite part of the meal. If we had known this extra food was coming, we would have ordered and shared one entree. We were at a hiking and wellness resort, after all, so at least for us, overeating was not on our menu.

I ordered the huevos rancheros, which were solid but not the best I have ever had. Too thick of a layer of chorizo chili sat under the egg, overpowering the dish. My friend ordered the breakfast burrito and found it not well-mixed. All spinach on one side and only egg on the other. She declared the burrito she ordered two days in a row from The Market superior.

Tii Gavo: Rating & review. 

Rating: 7
Total cost = $306, or $153 per person for two dinners.

We ate at Enchantment’s more casual restaurant, Tii Gavo, twice. First—in its main dining room and then in its bar area. The strength of its menu lies in its soups and appetizers, which we found to be the highlight. Using our in-room phone, I tried to make a reservation at Tii Gavo, leaving a message that went to the Che Ah Chi voicemail two times. It turned out Tii Gavo did not get it. So, to ensure we could get a Friday night table, we arrived early at 5:30 PM.

Successfully seated, we shared the squash soup, which was very good. I particularly liked the texture and flavor of its toasted pepitas. However, my chicken breast entree, which did come with a nice sauce, was unevenly cooked, with part of it seriously overdone. My friend ordered the vegetable risotto, which she thought to be okay.

The following night, we planned to head into town for dinner, though feeling relaxed after our late afternoon spa treatments at Mii amo, we canceled our Sedona restaurant reservation and returned to Tii Gavo to open seating in the bar area. Here, we shared an avocado dip appetizer, and each reordered the same squash soup we liked from the night before. 

Che Ah Chi: Rating & review.

Rating: 6
Total cost = $198, or $99 per person for one dinner.

Before arriving at Enchantment and via email, we made a reservation to eat at its upscale restaurant, Che Ah Chi, on the night of our arrival. The dinner was our joint birthday celebration, and I was looking forward to the meal. Unfortunately, it underdelivered. Our server was friendly, though more of a chatty and excellent salesman versus an educated guide to an epicurean experience.

Following his advice, I ordered the venison mole. The strength of this dish came from its flavorful sauce, which was a shame since there was too little of it to pair with the protein. Additionally, its side of sweet potato gratin did not work. Lacking the texture of a typical gratin, it presented like a mash, and its overt sweetness did not compliment the flavors of the venison as well as it should have.  

My friend ordered the duck entree and found its monochromatic mix of grapes, gnocchi, and mushrooms hard to distinguish. She did not love its flavor and left most of it uneaten. To his credit, our server noted this and discounted our bill by 10%. Given she and I were not in the mood to complain, we had not made a fuss. So, I was impressed our server took the initiative and had the authority to take corrective action.

Final thoughts on Enchantment Resort dining.

My conclusion on meals at Enchantment is that they have all the components—the views, the location, inspired menus, combined with the rich flavors of US southwest cuisine—and the potential to meet and exceed guest expectations. Perhaps our early December trip coincided with a slow time at Enchantment. Or a period when new serving and chef staff were in the process of getting trained.

Either way—and despite our mixed experience, we greatly appreciated the convenience of dining at the resort and would return to its restaurants based on this factor alone. At the end of a long and wonderfully active day, it was a pleasure to have the option to stay put and skip the 15 to 20-minute drive into town for a meal. You may discover you feel the same.

To give you an idea of what a weekend at Enchantment Resort might look like, here is how we spent our 3-day December stay. 

Day 1: Thursday

• Arrive in the afternoon from Phoenix, go on a resort tour, and check-in.
• Attend a vortex lecture at Mii amo.
• Hike to the Kachina Woman rock formation via the Boynton Canyon Vista trail.
• Join an evening meditation session at Mii amo and shop its boutique.
• Dinner: Dine at Che Ah Chi.
  
  

Day 2: Friday

• Early AM Gentle Yoga class at Mii amo.
• Breakfast: Pickup takeaway items in The Market to eat in our room.
• Shop at the Trailhouse outdoor store and Canyon Outfitters in Sedona.
• Drive to the Cathedral Rock shuttle parking lot, to catch a ride to its trailhead. Hike Cathedral Rock.
• Lunch: Eat our picnic lunch sandwiches picked up at The Market while at a trail overlook.
• Dinner: Early dinner at Tii Gavo.
• Evening spa service for my friend.
  
  

Day 3: Saturday

• Breakfast: Pick up takeaway items in The Market and eat outdoors on the patio outside Tii Gavo.
• Join the Boynton Canyon trail and hike to the Subway Cave.
• Lunch: Return from our hike and eat our picnic lunch sandwiches picked up at The Market at the hidden picnic table with a view just above building #38. 
• Afternoon spa services for both of us. I got the aromatherapy massage. Arrive early to use the sauna and hot tub in the locker room. 
• Join the evening meditation session at Mii amo.
• Dinner: We canceled our in-town dinner reservations and ate in the bar area at Tii Gavo.

• Early AM Yin Yang yoga class at Mii amo.
• Breakfast: at Hummingbird at Mii amo.
• Check out and return to Phoenix for our flight home.
  
  

What worked well during our stay and what did not?

During our few days at Enchantment, we loved the natural beauty of our surroundings and the sheer number of activities available on campus, and within a short drive. We particularly enjoyed the complimentary meditation sessions at Mii amo and the proximity to easy-access hiking trails. However, as a regular, though by no means expert, practitioner of yoga, I found Mii amo’s yoga offering, despite being in an attractive second-floor studio with a gorgeous view, to be disappointingly average. The two classes we joined were repetitive despite having different class descriptions.

Additionally, I found my Mii amo aromatherapy massage to be good, though the overall experience was not as upscale as its steep $400+ price tag warranted. Check-in took place in the downstairs locker room, and once checked in, the experience was very self-led until the massage. It was not clear where the waiting room was—it turned out through a non-descript door to upstairs (I had to ask) that led to a windowed space circled with padded bench seating with no attendant.

In comparison, I found my experience getting a massage at Mokara Spa at the Omni in Nashville on another friend trip to feel twice as luxurious, especially as attendants graciously offered small snacks and prosecco as I indulgently lounged on a chaise waiting for my services at half the price. Given Mii amo’s extensive spa menu, beautiful surroundings, and award-winning interiors, there is an excellent opportunity to exceed expectations that missed the mark during our visit.

How to book your stay.

To book your stay, you can visit the Enchantment Resort website and use its online booking system to check availability and make a reservation. The website also provides detailed information about the different accommodation options, amenities, and activities available at the resort, helping you further plan your stay. 

Or you can book via an online travel site like Booking.com, as we did. I pre-booked our two-queen Casita Guest Room mainly because I preferred Booking.com’s flexible no-penalty cancellation policy and delayed payment—not due until a week before our stay.

7 things to know before you go.

Here are a few things to know about being a guest at Enchantment Resort that will help you get the most out of your visit.

1. Enchantment Resort is pet-friendly. Good news for dog owners! Enchantment Resort is pet-friendly. See the full details of its pet policies here.
   
   
2. Bring cash for tips. If you choose to take a tour from one of the Enchantment Resort greeters as we did, be sure to have a tip on hand for the service. Additionally, you will want cash to tip golf cart drivers if you plan to request rides to Mii amo (about a 10-minute walk depending on where you are coming from on Enchantment Resort), and also tip room cleaners and private guides if you book activities.
   
   
3. Book your stay in advance. We saved hundreds on our room rate by reserving our Casita Guest Room several months in advance on Booking.com vs. reserving it a few weeks before our trip.
   
   
4. Ask for a room with a view. The units with the best resort views are in buildings #38 and #37. We stayed in #37. See my video walkthrough of our room and view here#.
   
   
5. Find the hidden picnic table with a view. Just above building #38 and hidden behind desert shrubbery is a picnic table perfectly placed with an incredible sweeping view of the entire canyon. Walking to it from the main reception will take just over five minutes.
   
   
6. Take advantage of the Mii Amo classes. As an Enchantment Resort guest, you get complimentary access to Mii Amo meditation sessions and other well-being programs and presentations. Check out a schedule of events during your stay to see which ones you want to join. Additionally, you can pay a fee to join the group fitness classes. The sunrise yoga class is worth it to see the Kachina Woman rock formation light up a golden blush as the sun rises. 
   
   
7. Shop for fun, then shop for more selection in town. I was impressed with the depth and breadth of attractive merchandise that Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo offered at several of its onsite boutiques. However, expect to pay a premium for the convenience of shopping on campus. Discover more options in town. If you want to pick up more outdoor gear, stop by a store like Canyon Outfitters.
   
   

What destinations to add to an Enchantment Resort trip?

To extend your visit and spend more time in the US Southwest, pair a stay in Sedona with time in nearby Flagstaff just 45 minutes north for more hiking or skiing—depending on the season. Or south in Scottsdale next to Phoenix. Alternatively, consider adding on a Grand Canyon or Las Vegas trip. It is just over a 2.5-hour drive north to the Grand Canyon from Sedona and a 4.5-hour drive west to Vegas.

Despite our few hiccups with service or dining, which are easily fixable, Enchantment Resort delivers on the most essential element of a truly enchanting getaway—location. Within Boynton Canyon, Enchantment guests immerse themselves in the serene sights, sounds, and scents of a breathtaking desert environment. Combining this with upscale services, activities, and luxurious lodging, I highly recommend booking a stay at Enchantment Resort.
